Carbon Offset Report - the Travel Industry

This publication is currently under development. Read the extract below.

Governments across Africa have responded to the need to cut back on carbon emissions by integrating carbon-offset programs into their NDC strategy to reduce GHG emissions. Industry and business professional bodies have also integrated carbon-offset programs. For example, Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) as well as the International Air Transport Association (IATA) both promote the environmental benefits of Carbon Offset Schemes for their members. South African Airlines offset their carbon emissions by purchasing carbon credits from clean energy programs in South Africa. Kenyan Airways offset their carbon by funding a geothermal power station that offsets their carbon emissions. Other Airlines with similar programs include Seychelles’ Airways that have implemented an innovative electronic airbus fuelled by electricity, cutting their emissions dramatically. Kulula South African Airline plant trees and bamboo in rural communities throughout South Africa, offsetting carbon emissions, increasing biodiversity, conserving the natural ecosystem and providing benefits to the local community. Air Mauritius planted more than 500 units of mangrove propagules at the International Ramsar Site of Pointe D’esny, in the south-eastern part of Mauritius to offset their carbon emissions.

The International Tourism Partnership, Cornell Hotel Sustainability Benchmarking Index (CHSB), and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) all endorse and promote carbon offset programs within the tourism sector. For example, The Hotel Verde in Cape Town, South Africa, was the first hotel in Africa to offer 100% offset carbon-neutral accommodation and conferencing.
