Stock exchanges can have a significant influence over listed companies within their sphere of authority. Using this considerable influence, they can put into practise regulations requiring listed companies to report on their environmental, social and governance policies and impacts. A number of stock exchanges around the world adopt such approaches. In sub-Saharan Africa, a lack of sophistication in the legal environment has hindered this process with the exception of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, Nigeria and Kenya.
We are analysing all the African Stock Exchanges on a number of ESG and sustainability disclosure, guidelines and regulation.
We will be adding more African countries for assessment and analysis for annual reporting on the issue and policy dialogue.
