About Citizen Science
The main objective of the Citizen Science Program and Digital App is to contribute towards a collective network of people and community across riparian countries to reverse environmental degradation, improve the habitats of hundreds of species as well as increase sustainable use of natural resources to improve the economic wellbeing and livelihoods of those who benefit from natural resources within a number of wetlands within the River Nile Equatorial Lakes.

Biodiversity Driver - (SDG 1, SDG 2, SDG 7, SDG 8, SDG 9, SDG 12)
To promote across all key stakeholders conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity with the objective of reducing the loss of habitats and forests across NELSAP. To promote sustainable and legal approaches to managing and harvesting fish and invertebrate stocks. Visit the library for further information.
Economic Driver - (SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 10, SDG 12, SDG 13, SDG 14, SDG 15)
Wetlands provide goods and services that play a vital role in determining economic output and human wellbeing. However, the unsustainable use of natural resources within wetlands is a problem. This citizen science app includes a library of resources that promote alternative approaches to achieving  income that does not degrade natural resources. Visit the library for further information.
Cultural Driver - (SDG 3, SDG 4, SDG 5, SDG 10)
Traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) can make a contribution to science, economic growth and community wellbeing. The library within the citizen science app invites local communities to contribute their TEK. For example, traditional medicine of certain types of plants and leaves can provide remedy for common aliments and diseases such as constipation, nausea, headaches and dizziness. Technological Driver - (SDG 3, SDG 9, SDG 10, SDG 13, SDG 14, SDG 15, SDG 16, SDG 17)
The citizen science app aims to narrow the digital divide between groups who do and do not have access to modern technology. The citizen science app includes a library of resources that reduce technological inequality. Visit the library for further information.
Social Driver - (SDG 1, SDG 2, SDG 3, SDG 4, SDG 5, SDG 7, SDG 8, SDG 9,  SDG 10, SDG 12) 
To promote citizen science research groups, working groups, community groups in an effort to support life-long learning and prompt behavioural change. To raise awareness of the values of biodiversity and the steps they can take to conserve and use it sustainably. Visit the library for further information.
Policy Driver - (SDG 4, SDG 5, SDG 10, SDG 16, SDG 17)
Citizen science can contribute towards various stages of the policy-making cycle. For example, through systematic observations supported by scientific evidence, problems, issues and concerns can be communicated to high-level decision-makers. Citizen science can facilitate the inclusion of diverse societal perspectives in decision-making, since the inclusion of a broad representation of society is included in the data gathering. Through citizen science the implementation of policies become more meaningful, since such policies have legitimisation and endorsement by local citizens. Visit the library for further information.

Target 1.4: The citizen science program and app aims to enable local people access to technology that provides capacity building on gaining equal rights to natural resources, financial services, including microfinance.

Target 2.3: The citizen science program and app aims to enable small-scale food producers, in particular women, indigenous peoples, family farmers, pastoralists and fishers to gain knowledge on financial services, markets and opportunities for value addition and alternative sources of income for non-farm employment.

Target 4.5   The citizen science program and app aims to reduce gender disparities in education and vocational training by encouraging women to participate in a number of opportunities.

Target 5.b Enhance the use of enabling technology, in particular information and communications technology, to promote the empowerment of women.

GOAL 6 Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation.

TARGET 6.b Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management, using case studies, funding and investment opportunities.

GOAL 7 Promote affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

TARGET 7.1 Promote alternative usage of energy to  ensure access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services.

GOAL 8 Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

TARGET 8.3 Promote capacity building that support productive activities, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, and encourage the formalization and growth of micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises, including through access to financial services.

GOAL 9 Promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation

TARGET 9.3 Increase the access of small-scale industrial and other enterprises, in particular in developing countries, to financial services, including affordable credit, and their integration into value chains and markets.

GOAL 10 Reduce inequality within wetlands through education

TARGET 10.2 Empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status


GOAL 12 Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

TARGET 12.a Support wetlands to strengthen their scientific and technological capacity to move towards more sustainable patterns of consumption and production


GOAL 13 Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

TARGET 13.1 Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries


GOAL 14 Promote, conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

TARGET 14.1 Aim to reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution


GOAL 15 Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss through educational videos. 

TARGET 15.5 Take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats through awareness.


GOAL 16  Promote peaceful and inclusive societies within wetlands

TARGET 16.b Promote and enforce non-discriminatory laws and policies for sustainable development

TARGET 17.16 Enhance the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development, complemented by multi-stakeholder partnerships that mobilize and share knowledge, expertise, technology and financial resources, to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. 


L'objectif principal du programme de science citoyenne et de l'application numérique est de contribuer à un réseau collectif de personnes et de communautés à travers les pays riverains pour inverser la dégradation de l'environnement, améliorer les habitats de centaines d'espèces et accroître l'utilisation durable des ressources naturelles pour améliorer l'économie le bien-être et les moyens de subsistance de ceux qui bénéficient des ressources naturelles dans un certain nombre de zones humides des lacs équatoriaux du Nil.


Le programme de science citoyenne présente six avantages clés.

Facteur de biodiversité - (SDG 1, SDG 2, SDG 7, SDG 8, SDG 9, SDG 12)

Promouvoir auprès de toutes les parties prenantes clés la conservation et l'utilisation durable de la biodiversité dans le but de réduire la perte d'habitats et de forêts à travers le NELSAP. Moteur économique - (SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 10, SDG 12, SDG 13, SDG 14, SDG 15)

Les zones humides fournissent des biens et des services qui jouent un rôle vital dans la détermination de la production économique et du bien-être humain. Cependant, l'utilisation non durable des ressources naturelles dans les zones humides est un problème. Cette application de science citoyenne comprend une bibliothèque de ressources qui promeuvent des approches alternatives pour obtenir des revenus qui ne dégradent pas les ressources naturelles. Pilote culturel - (SDG 3, SDG 4, SDG 5, SDG 10)

Les connaissances écologiques traditionnelles (TEK) peuvent contribuer à la science, à la croissance économique et au bien-être de la communauté. La bibliothèque de l'application de science citoyenne invite les communautés locales à apporter leur TEK. Par exemple, la médecine traditionnelle de certains types de plantes et de feuilles peut fournir un remède contre les aliments et maladies courants tels que la constipation, les nausées, les maux de tête et les étourdissements. Pilote technologique - (SDG 3, SDG 9, SDG 10, SDG 13, SDG 14, SDG 15, SDG 16, SDG 17)

L'application de science citoyenne vise à réduire la fracture numérique entre les groupes qui ont ou n'ont pas accès à la technologie moderne. Promouvoir des groupes de recherche en science citoyenne, des groupes de travail, des groupes communautaires dans un effort pour soutenir l'apprentissage tout au long de la vie et inciter à un changement de comportement. Pilote de politique - (SDG 4, SDG 5, SDG 10, SDG 16, SDG 17)

La science citoyenne peut contribuer à différentes étapes du cycle d'élaboration des politiques. Par exemple, grâce à des observations systématiques étayées par des preuves scientifiques, les problèmes, les problèmes et les préoccupations peuvent être communiqués aux décideurs de haut niveau. La science citoyenne peut faciliter l'inclusion de diverses perspectives sociétales dans la prise de décision, puisque l'inclusion d'une large représentation de la société est incluse dans la collecte de données. Grâce à la science citoyenne, la mise en œuvre des politiques devient plus significative, car ces politiques sont légitimées et approuvées par les citoyens locaux. Kusudi kuu la Programu ya Sayansi ya Raia na App ya Dijiti ni kuchangia kuelekea mtandao wa pamoja wa watu na jamii kote nchi zenye ukame ili kurudisha uharibifu wa mazingira, kuboresha makazi ya mamia ya spishi na pia kuongeza matumizi endelevu ya maliasili ili kuboresha uchumi ustawi na maisha ya wale wanaofaidika na maliasili ndani ya maeneo oevu mengi ndani ya Maziwa ya Ikweta ya Mto Nile.

Dereva wa Biodiversity - (SDG 1, SDG 2, SDG 7, SDG 8, SDG 9, SDG 12) Kukuza kwa wadau wote muhimu uhifadhi na matumizi endelevu ya bioanuwai kwa lengo la kupunguza upotezaji wa makazi na misitu kote NELSAP. Dereva wa Kiuchumi - (SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 10, SDG 12, SDG 13, SDG 14, SDG 15) Ardhi oevu hutoa bidhaa na huduma ambazo zina jukumu muhimu katika kuamua pato la uchumi na ustawi wa binadamu. Walakini, matumizi mabaya ya maliasili ndani ya ardhioevu ni shida. Dereva wa Teknolojia - (SDG 3, SDG 9, SDG 10, SDG 13, SDG 14, SDG 15, SDG 16, SDG 17) Programu ya sayansi ya raia inakusudia kupunguza mgawanyiko wa dijiti kati ya vikundi ambavyo hufanya na hawapati teknolojia ya kisasa. Dereva wa Jamii - (SDG 1, SDG 2, SDG 3, SDG 4, SDG 5, SDG 7, SDG 8, SDG 9, SDG 10, SDG 12) Kukuza vikundi vya utafiti wa sayansi ya raia, vikundi vinavyofanya kazi, vikundi vya jamii katika juhudi za kusaidia ujifunzaji wa maisha yote na mabadiliko ya tabia haraka. Dereva wa Sera - (SDG 4, SDG 5, SDG 10, SDG 16, SDG 17) Sayansi ya raia inaweza kuchangia katika hatua anuwai za mzunguko wa utengenezaji wa sera. Kwa mfano, kupitia uchunguzi wa kimfumo unaoungwa mkono na ushahidi wa kisayansi, shida, maswala na wasiwasi zinaweza kufahamishwa kwa watoa maamuzi wa kiwango cha juu.
